Dr. Ram Emani is a Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon at Boston Children’s Hospital. In this conversation, Jessica and Ram discuss how curiosity has shaped his career, his research, and ultimately his relationship with his patients. Raised by parents who always encouraged his curiosity, Ram started college intending to be an engineer focusing on the automotive industry, but a class that allowed him to interact with patients changed everything.
Jessica’s oldest son, Ethan, was born with a rare heart defect, and he died at age 7 in Boston, needing a heart transplant. Since 2015 Ram has served as a board member of the Ethan Lindberg Foundation. In this rare, insightful, and intimate conversation, Jessica asks Ram about his practices to prepare for surgery, how he handles successes and failures, and how he keeps himself mentally and physically healthy so he can operate at such a high level.
This is an episode for anyone aspiring to be a doctor, for parents raising children with complex illnesses, for medical professionals who want to commit to practicing at a high level while maintaining their own health, and for anyone who wants to be inspired and reminded that following your heart and following your curiosity can change lives, yours and others.
