Meena has spent the last 27 years caring for some of the sickest children in the United States at the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at Boston Children’s Hospital. She’s a wife, mother, dear friend of many, and a breast cancer survivor. Jessica and Meena met over a decade ago when Meena was a primary nurse for Jessica’s son Ethan during his year-long hospital stay.

Melissa Burgess is a US Army Veteran who spent time in Iraq as a medic. She’s also a wife, mother, and Founder of the candle company Craft + Foster. Melissa received a DIY candle kit for her birthday and quickly fell in love with the candlemaking process. In a few short years, this “accidental” candle company grew from a local candle pop-up to a nationally recognized brand featured in Neiman Marcus, GQ, WWD, FabFitFun, The Golden Globes, and amazing independent retailers nationwide. Melissa found that candlemaking gave her a creative and therapeutic outlet while juggling the demands of motherhood and processing an ongoing journey with PTSD.

On today’s episode, Jessica has a conversation with Carol Dimas, Founder of Educational Advocates . For more than 20 years, Carol and her team have been advocating for families and children to receive all of their rights including identification, eligibility for an IEP or 504, appropriate goals, accommodations, services, and placement to improve their ability to have appropriate access to their education.
In the first part of the conversation, Jessia and Carol discuss the laws that govern specialized education in our country, they discuss the present state of education and the purpose of educational advocacy and finally, Carol shares specific ways parents can take action in their school districts.
Jessica and Carol have worked together to advocate for Jessica’s son and so this conversation is both intimate and inspiring. We have been entrusted with our children and it is our right and responsibility to speak up and advocate for their needs.
